Mercedes sets the bar high for competitors and ironically that high standard must be met for new models and upgrades made under the brand as well. The newest effort, Mercedes SLS AMG is therefore given a critical eye. Can engineers take an icon and breathe modern life into a bigger than life vehicle? Mercedes marketing is already giving the new version of the 300SL Gullwing a dramatic entry onto the landscape.

However, auto enthusiasts are not an easy crowd to awe and especially when other vehicles can match performance and at a much lower price than $183,000. Then, again, there is the intrigue of the exotic. Let’s take a look at what Mercedes SLS AMG (Gullwing) offers and let discriminating auto minds decide.

The SLS AMG is powered by a 6.2-L V-8 that whiplashes 0 to 60 in 3.7 seconds (the racing model, SLS AMG GT3, debuting at the New York Auto Show comes in at 3.5). The powerful V-8 offers 563 horses, 479 pound-feet of torque, and a top speed of 196 mph.The SLS AMG, the first car built completely by AMG—Mercedes’ performance division, has a long hood and short rear (weight distribution: 48 front/52 rear) with the memorable gullwing doors. The SLS AMG is equipped with a seven-speed automated dual-clutch manual transaxle. Optional on the 3,564 pound aluminum body and chassis are carbon ceramic brakes.

Mercedes SLS AMG, the brands new flag ship sports car, built with the grand memory of the 300SL lingering and inspiring engineers to produce another rare beauty offers interior luxury for the spirited including racing-style bucket seats and several features made from carbon fiber.

It can be said that history can be intriguing enough to propel itself into the future—or so a look at the Mercedes SLS AMG suggests.
